Febrero 16, 2017, marka historia.

February 16, 2017 marked history, A Day Without Immigrants starts trending on social media. A Day Without Immigrants is a day where all immigrants did not go to work, shut down all their businesses, didn’t go to school, etc. They stayed at home or went to protest.

I believe Mexicans started the trend. In an attempt  to prove that without Mexicans, the U.S wouldn’t be the same. Same goes to all the immigrants; the U.S was built by immigration.

Many students did not show up to school that day, shop owners shut down their businesses, and employees did not go to work. They stayed at home to show that if they were not there, the country would not be able to function properly; they are needed.

There were protests going on in big cities such as Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, and Boston. But everyone across the U.S, including Livermore, participated in the strike.

At Livermore High School, 288 students missed school that day. 215 students were excused and 114 students were unexcused. On an average school day, about 150-190 students are absent everyday. The little businesses, such as the Mexican supermarkets, were shut down.

I also noticed that immigrant students who are legally here were the ones who missed school, but the ones who recently came to the U.S came to school.

Most likely because they felt safer going to school than staying at home and having to worry that the border patrol would come for them.

I believe this did make a difference. It’s a good way to prove a point without violence.

Protests like these should inspire people not to be afraid and that you have a voice. Use your rights to your full advantage. If you agree or disagree with this protest, you cannot deny the fact that the U.S was built on immigration. It was built on freedom and prosperity.
