“Why so sullen?” he asked her. She sighed and looked down at him with milky gray eyes. “I once dreamed,” she whispered, “that one day I could fly, my wings reflecting the golden glint of the sun.”

She looked up yearningly. He blinked up at her sad, glowing face, then down at her long legs, lifting her up towards the clouds. Then he looked down at the stumps that rested on the black seat of his wheelchair, and thought about how she was closer to the sky than he ever would be.
